Canada Roots used their innovation funding to host their “Canada Roots Exchange” program. The initiative sought to engage a small group of Indigenous and non-Indigenous youth leaders who would receive training and support from Canadian Roots Exchange (CRE) and in turn would facilitate interactive workshops and activities to spark dialogue and better understanding and dispelling of stereotypes about Indigenous communities.

As part of the project, a select number of youth would participate in an exchange to an Indigenous community where they would gain further hands-on experience about the daily realities of Indigenous communities. Finally, the youth leaders from Atlantic Canada would be given a forum to be part of a national youth network at CRE’s national youth conference in Saskatoon in March 2014 where the youth leaders would also be presenters and share some of their experiences from their work in the previous months.

80 youth in the Atlantic took part in sessions during the work done in the Atlantic. An additional 25 youth took part in a session organization at CRE’s national Conference. The participants at the national conference were a mixture of high school aged and post-secondary aged youth while the work in the Atlantic primarily targeted university students.
